📢 NOTIFICATION
The Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences (ASSMS), GC University Lahore, is a premier institute for advanced research and training in mathematical sciences.
To uphold its legacy of excellence and to align with global best practices, this PhD Admission Policy establishes rigorous standards for student intake, consistent with HEC regulations while incorporating enhanced academic and evaluative criteria comparable to leading international mathematical institutes.
- To ensure that students admitted to the PhD program demonstrate adequate academic preparation, originality, and aptitude for independent research.
- To align ASSMS admission standards with world-class universities and strengthen its position as a regional hub for mathematical sciences.
- To guarantee transparency, merit, and quality throughout the admission process.
- To standardize admission benchmarks to ensure consistency, fairness, and long-term quality assurance across sessions.
A candidate shall be eligible for admission to the PhD (Mathematics) program at ASSMS if they meet the following minimum requirements:
- MS/MPhil or equivalent (18 years of education) in Mathematics or a closely related field from an HEC-recognized institution.
- Minimum CGPA 3.00/4.00 (or First Division where CGPA is not applicable).
- Candidates awaiting final results may apply conditionally (previous semesters CGPA at least 3.00).
- Equivalence from HEC is mandatory for all foreign degrees.
Must pass any HEC-approved test (localized or international), including:
- GAT-Subject (Mathematics) with the required qualifying score, or
- GRE Subject (Mathematics) as applicable.
- Test validity, scoring, and HEC rules as updated from time to time shall be strictly adhered to.
To ensure only highly motivated and research-capable candidates are admitted, Abdus Salam-SMS adopts the following higher-level standards, comparable to top global mathematics departments:
- Strong foundation in core mathematics:
- Real Analysis, Complex Analysis, Algebra, Topology, Functional Analysis, Differential Equations, Geometry, and Mathematical Methods.
Every candidate must submit:
- Statement of Purpose (SOP) clearly expressing:
- Research interests
- Mathematical background
- Motivation for pursuing PhD at ASSMS
- Long-term academic goals
- The scope and topic list shall be available on the website
- Research Proposal (Preliminary) demonstrating:
- Understanding of advanced mathematical concepts
- Ability to frame problems and identify research directions
- Familiarity with current developments in their chosen field
- SOP and Research Proposal will be evaluated using a standardized rubric to ensure objectivity.
- Plagiarism check is mandatory before evaluation.
- SOP word limit: 1000 words; Research Proposal: 1500–2000 words (for standardization and clarity).
- (Proposal is considered only for assessing potential—not a final commitment.)
- At least two strong academic recommendation letters from senior faculty who can attest to the candidate’s:
- Mathematical maturity
- Analytical reasoning
- Research capability
- Work ethic and integrity
- Letters must be written on official letterheads and sent confidentially or verified via official email addresses.
- Candidates with letters from reputable international or national mathematicians will be given preference.
Abdus Salam-SMS shall conduct a PhD Admission Test designed to match international benchmarking. The test will assess:
(Names of the reference books shall be available on the website)
- Real and Functional Analysis
- Algebra / Linear Algebra
- Complex Analysis
- Topology
- Differential Equations
- Geometry
- Probability & Mathematical Methods
Shortlisted candidates will undergo a rigorous interview by a panel of Admission Committee, focusing on:
- Mathematical reasoning and depth of understanding
- Ability to think abstractly and solve problems independently
- Clarity of research objectives
- Communication skills
- Ethical and professional conduct
The interview may include:
- On-spot problem solving
- Oral explanation of mathematical concepts
- Discussion of prior research (if any)
This mirrors practices in leading global universities.
Admission will be based on the combined evaluation of:
- Academic record
- Admission Test performance
- Interview assessment
- Research potential & motivation
- Letters of recommendation
- Availability of supervisors in the chosen area
- The final merit list will be generated using a weighted formula (Test + Interview + Academic Record + SOP/Proposal).
- To ensure transparency and consistency, the following weightage distribution (or ranges) shall be applied in merit calculation:
| Component | Weightage (Range) |
|---|---|
| Admission Test | 50% (±5%) |
| Interview | 30% (±5%) |
| Academic Profile (CGPA, thesis quality, academic distinctions) | 20% (±5%) |
These ranges allow controlled flexibility while maintaining fairness and international benchmarking.
Only the top-ranked candidates fulfilling these criteria will be selected subject to the availability of vacant slots/seats.
- PhD is a full-time commitment at Abdus Salam-SMS.
- Students must comply with the School’s residency and course-work requirements.
- External engagements (jobs, part-time work) are not allowed unless formally approved.
- Students working in government or private institutions must provide NOC and proof of study leave (where applicable).
Abdus Salam-SMS encourages international applicants. They will be required to demonstrate:
- Equivalent academic credentials
- Compliance with visa and HEC equivalence requirements
- Entry examinations requirements are the same as 4.4
- Admission will be processed strictly, based on merit.
- Score breakdown (Test + Interview + Academic Record) will be documented and archived.
- No discretionary or special admissions will be permitted.
