Established in 2003 as an independent center for mathematical sciences, the school is affiliated with the Government College University, Lahore. Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences (AS-SMS) has rapidly evolved into a center of excellence for research.
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the website of the Abdus Salam School of Mathematical Sciences, Government College University Lahore.
Named after Pakistan’s first Nobel Laureate, Professor Dr. Abdus Salam, the School carries a distinguished academic identity and an important national responsibility. Since its establishment in 2003, ASSMS has contributed to postgraduate education, advanced research, international academic collaboration, and the development of mathematical talent in Pakistan.
As Chairman of the Board of Governors, I recognize the vital role that ASSMS can play in strengthening the mathematical sciences and connecting them with contemporary developments in science, technology, industry, and national planning. The Board remains committed to providing the strategic guidance and institutional support required for the School to pursue academic excellence, responsible governance, research innovation, and sustainable development.
ASSMS is entering a renewed phase of academic activity and national outreach. Its initiatives include regular seminars by distinguished national and international speakers, thematic research schools conducted with national and international resource persons, nationwide calls for research proposals, mathematics competitions and Olympiad activities from school to university level, and free summer mini-courses open to students, researchers, academicians, professionals, and participants from industry across Pakistan.
The School is also strengthening its international engagement by hosting eminent scholars, organizing conferences and specialised academic events, and developing relationships with leading mathematical institutions and forums, including the International Mathematical Union, the European Mathematical Society, the International Mathematics Master initiative, and the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics.
Government College University Lahore has a proud intellectual legacy extending back to 1864. The association of Professor Abdus Salam with this historic institution places upon us a special responsibility to preserve his legacy through serious scholarship, scientific inquiry, international cooperation, and opportunities for future generations of mathematicians.
I appreciate the efforts of the Director General, faculty, staff, students, members of the Board of Governors, and national and international partners who are contributing to the continued development of ASSMS. I am confident that, through collective commitment and effective governance, the School will further strengthen its position as a leading centre for mathematical research, advanced education, and national capacity building.
I invite students, researchers, scholars, institutions, and international partners to engage with ASSMS and contribute to its mission of advancing mathematical sciences for the benefit of Pakistan and the wider academic community.
Prof. Dr. Muhammad Omer Chaudhry
